The .ru domain extension

What is a .ru domain?

.ru is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to Russia. Country extensions carry a signal that generic ones cannot buy: a visitor in Russia reads .ru as "this business is here". Search engines treat it the same way, which is why a .ru address usually outranks a generic one for local queries.

The .ru registry is operated by Coordination Center for TLD RU. The extension has been in the root zone since 1994 — a long record by the standards of the domain name system, and one reason registrars and hosting companies treat it as a safe default.

DomainNameAPI is an ICANN-accredited registrar. Registration, renewal, transfer and DNS for .ru all run from a single panel — and from a single API, if you would rather automate them.

A .ru name can be 2 to 60 characters long. The registry allows one year at a time, so renewal comes around every twelve months. Turn on auto-renew and it stops being something you have to remember.

How to register a .ru domain

No paperwork, no waiting for approval. Four steps, and the name is live on your name servers.

  1. Search the name

Type the name you want into the box above. We query the registry live, so the answer is the registry's, not a cached guess.

  2. Pick your term

This registry sells one year at a time, so the term is fixed. Auto-renew keeps it from lapsing.

  3. Enter contact details

Registrant, admin, technical and billing contacts. Whois privacy can be switched on at the same time so your address stays out of public records.

  4. Point it somewhere

Set your name servers, or use ours and manage A, CNAME, MX and TXT records from the panel. Changes reach the registry immediately.

What happens when a .ru domain expires

Most people meet these rules for the first time on the day they matter. Here is the whole sequence for .ru, with the numbers this registry actually uses.

  1. Renewal window Up to the expiry date you can renew at the normal price — 44.90 USD per year. Nothing changes for visitors; the site stays up.
  2. The name stops working On expiry the registry pulls .ru out of the zone. The website and every email address on it go dark the same day. This is the moment most owners notice.
  3. Redemption — 30 days For 30 days the name is still yours, but recovering it costs 79.90 USD instead of the renewal price. Nobody else can take it during this window.
  4. Deletion After the redemption window the registry releases the name and anyone can register it. There is no appeal at this point — the only route back is to buy it from whoever takes it.

None of this has to happen. Auto-renew and expiry reminders are on by default in every DomainNameAPI account, and the API exposes expiry dates so you can wire them into your own alerts.

Moving a .ru domain to DomainNameAPI

.ru cannot be transferred between registrars through the standard process — this registry does not offer it. Whoever you registered the name with, that is where it stays until it expires.

If you need the name managed here, the practical route is to let it expire deliberately and re-register it with us, which only works if you are certain nobody else is waiting for it. Talk to us first — our team will tell you honestly whether it is worth the risk for your name.
